Fullständig jobbeskrivning

DeLaval is now looking for an Industrial PhD Student!

Do you want to work in a global company where you can contribute to a more sustainable food production? DeLaval is a leading developer, manufacturer, and supplier of solutions for dairy farmers around the world. As a company built on innovation, we constantly work to find ways of helping our customers do more with less.

DeLaval is now looking for an Industrial PhD Student for the project ‘Maximizing the usefulness of sensors for a successful transition period in dairy cows’. This 4-year project is carried out in collaboration with SLU, Swedish University of Agricultural Science.

DeLaval has a longstanding collaboration with SLU, including several successful industrial PhD student projects. SLU has a key role in the development for sustainable life, based on science and education.

Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) is gaining increasing importance, where farmers monitor and manage production efficiency, health, and well-being of the cows in their herd with advanced sensor technology. DeLaval offers a wide range of sensor solutions and digital services that supply a large amount of data and e.g. create daily alerts to farmers to monitor and manage cows. However, not all information today is used to its full potential and turned into action.

The objective of the PhD project is to develop methods to identify cows with elevated risks for diseases during the transition period by exploring the available data from multiple DeLaval sensor systems, e.g. measuring rumination, cow location, health indicators for specific diseases, progesterone levels to monitor fertility and milk yield. The approach will include sensor fusion and predictive modelling and the project aims to strengthen the research and innovation within sensor-based dairy cow management. The results will enable farmers to act quickly to prevent or resolve health issues during the transition period and thus support sustainability through improved animal welfare and farm economy.
