Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Läkare Utan Gränser is an international medical humanitarian organization determined to bring quality medical care to people in crises around the world, when and where they need it. Our fundamental principles are neutrality, impartiality, independence and medical ethics. In Sweden, we raise funds, recruit people and speak out to contribute to saving lives and alleviating suffering in the world. All our work is governed by a volunteer spirit.

We are looking for an inspirational General Director (GD) to lead and further develop the Swedish section of MSF. The office consists of around 100 employees working with fundraising, communication, HR, innovation, evaluation and support. MSF Sweden has a branch office in Finland with around 20 employees and the GD act as the supervisor of the Country Director of MSF Finland.

The role
The role is challenging and requires a strong presence in relevant platforms in Swedish society as well as internationally within the MSF movement. The General Director is part of developing and leading MSF Sweden and is responsible for the overall management of MSF Sweden and the achievement of its organizational goals and objectives and reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Your core responsibilities

  • Strongly contribute to setting and fostering the medical humanitarian vision of MSF in Sweden
  • Be responsible for the development of the MSF Sweden strategy in close collaboration with the Management Team, under the leadership of the Board of Directors.
  • Take overall responsibility for financial management, budget control, risk management and efficient use of resources.
  • Collaborate and network with the international MSF movement.
  • Inspire and lead the teams of MSF Sweden as well as coach and evaluate the Management Team.
  • Lead the Management Team in supporting the Board in their interactions with the rest of the movement and help them to drive issues that the Board wishes to highlight and develop, as well as manage MSF Finland in close contact with the Country director
  • Advocate for, and raise awareness of, humanitarian issues within Swedish society.

You will also develop creative ways for MSF Sweden to contribute to the movement through participation or taking the lead in discussions, seminars, different platforms and dossiers. Contributions may also include direct support to operations. The GD of MSF Sweden is a member of the extended Committee of Directors in Operational Center Brussels and other international platforms.

The requirements

  • Advanced degree in relevant field (Social Sciences, International Law, Economics, Business Administration)
  • A strong commitment to humanitarian values and principles
  • Extensive experience in the international humanitarian sector, partly acquired in international duty stations
  • Senior leadership and managerial experience in complex, multi-cultural organisation with demonstrated ability to manage and embrace a diverse work force.
  • Proven track record in leading and implementing strategy, execute plans and demonstrated capacity to develop programs, prioritize and delegate tasks and allocate resources.
  • Capability to empower and unite teams and individuals behind shared goals
  • Ability to critically analyze humanitarian issues with a broad vision and critical sense of the future of humanitarian work and organizations.
  • Excellent communication and networking skills with the ability and will to engage with various audiences.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)

It’s highly valuable if you have

  • Fluency in spoken and written Swedish
  • Knowledge of French, spoken and written
  • Prior MSF experience

Employment terms and conditions

  • Type of contract: Full-time position of a total of 6 years. Fixed term for three years with possible extension.
  • Entry date: Preferably beginning of May 2024, can be discussed
  • Goal oriented working time (37,5 hours/week is full time). Ability to work flexibly (including evenings and weekends) if and when needed.
  • Salary: 63 369 SEK/month. The salary is set according to the MSF Sweden Salary policy and not negotiable. Previous work experience, in addition to the years of requirement, (minimum 2 years) in the same or highly similar role will give an additional 2,5 % or max 5 % salary increase (depending on length of experience). This will be evaluated and calculated if shortlisted for interview. Prior MSF experience is compensated with an additional 1,5 % of the base salary for each year (max 10 years).
  • Benefits: Pension, health insurance, life insurance, travel insurance, insurance for work related injuries, wellness contribution (2000 SEK/year) and one wellness hour per week.
  • Vacation: 32 days/year.
  • Full compensation day 1-14 of sick leave.
  • Work Style & location: Hybrid with home office/In-Person at the office in Liljeholmen, Stockholm. The GD will be required to travel to international project locations, to other MSF offices worldwide, and more frequently to the OCB office in Brussels.
  • As an employee with MSF Sweden you are bound by the collective bargaining agreement for non-profit organisations between Fremia and Unionen & Akademikerförbunden.
