Website Mojang Studios
Mojang Studios is best known as the creators of Minecraft, but we’re also on a mission – to build a better world through the power of play.
Why play? Well, play is at the heart of everything we do. It’s the blocky backbone of our games, the core of our development philosophy, and even the origin of our name. From the relentless experimentation of our endlessly inspiring community to the classrooms where Minecraft has become an essential teaching tool, play is the bedrock of our existence.
At Mojang, we create games, products and services to inspire creativity. We develop games with a strong community focus and put players first in everything we do. Our games are built for everyone, because we believe in demonstrating equality and not just talking about it. We are looking for an experienced Art Director to join us in developing new games. This is a full time-role based in Stockholm with a hybrid remote working model. We collaborate closely within and across disciplines as well as with our partner studios in the UK and Sweden.
As an Art Director within Internal New Games you will be responsible for leading the art craft within a specific game project, working in close collaboration with the Creative Director as well as product and people leads. You will be responsible for ensuring the game’s visuals are of consistently high quality – we know Minecraft can look great, and we want your help to push and evolve it even further. You will also be responsible for the art craft within the team, making sure it’s healthy, happy, creative, and productive. Our ideal candidate has a strong desire to work closely with other disciplines on the team with the ultimate outcome of creating a fantastic player experience.
What you will do:
- You will be responsible for setting and consistently maintaining the direction for the visuals of a game project, in close collaboration with the Game Director.
- Lead and inspire the project’s art team, internally and with partners.
- Collaborate with other discipline directors and product leadership team to build a consistent experience for players, and with the people leadership team to create a healthy and productive work environment for artists.
- Create documentation, guidelines, and best practices for art
- Review others’ art to make sure it follows the overall creative vision
- Coach and develop the internal art staff together with an art manager.
- Work hands-on with game visuals as needed, setting a high-quality standard for others to follow.
- Work with partner teams inside and outside the studio to support a wide variety of initiatives: Marketing, consumer products, cutscenes, brand development, trailers and more.
- Grow a healthy, collaborative, passionate, fun, and creative culture.
We believe you’ll have some of the following skills and experience:
- Experience working both as an Art Director and staff manager.
- A degree in relevant or applicable fields or equivalent work experience.
- Being comfortable in a wide range of art styles.
- Experience in communicating with and leading external teams of artists and other creatives.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Deeper knowledge around foundational elements for Minecraft art, specifically around low-poly 3D art and pixel art, is a big bonus.
Mojang Studios
Mojang Studios is a Microsoft-owned game developer. The company was founded in Stockholm, Sweden and has offices around the world, including Stockholm, Redmond, Tokyo, London, and Shanghai. We’re always working on new and exciting ways to expand the Minecraft universe.
Our community is global and incredibly diverse. We keep this in mind when developing anything, as we want people to feel included in Minecraft. And in recruiting, our goal is to make Mojang Studios as diverse as our community.
We got started as a tiny indie developer, and part of our culture still reflects that heritage. But we’re also proud to belong to Xbox Game Studios, which creates unique opportunities to grow and develop.
To help us achieve amazing things, we have built an equally amazing studio space. Situated right on the water by Söder Mälarstrand, it’s filled to the brim with all the tools, toys and caffeine required to create world-class entertainment.
But in the end, it’s the people of Mojang Studios that make this place truly special. When you join, you’ll find yourself in the company of incredibly bright, warm, and creative individuals – all united and working toward a single goal. Come help us reach it!
